Looking our Best for Jesus!

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Colossians 3:17

In my ten years of parenting, I’m pretty sure I’ve learned more from my children
than they’ve learned from me. An example of this took place on a Saturday night
while preparing for church the following day. My wife asked our children to choose
their Sunday outfits. Within minutes, we heard a small skirmish coming from the
boys’ room as our oldest son was emphatically trying to reason with his younger
brother that his outfit didn’t match. Moments later, our three year old emerged,
beaming from ear to ear. He was wearing brown pants and a bright orange shirt
covered with a blue and red checkered vest. When Jodi noted how handsome he
looked and asked him to explain his clothing choice, he enthusiastically exclaimed,
“I’m looking my best for JESUS!!!!!” “(From the mouths of children and nursing
babies, you have ordained praise…” Psalm 8:2a) We couldn’t argue with that or think
of a better motivation for choosing our wardrobe!

Luke’s simple, emphatic statement, said so matter-of-factly in his adorable little
three year old voice, challenged me. Do I strive, with such enthusiasm, to look my
best for Jesus, not just outwardly, but inwardly as well? Is my main desire in the way
I dress, speak, work, serve, parent, and live life, to please my Heavenly Father? It
should be! And, when it does, it should bring me as much joy as it did for my young
son. His delight in pleasing the Lord was contagious. I can tell you that my wife and I
definitely stepped up our clothing choices that Sunday!

Fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, our desire to please God should bring us joy
that in turn, encourages others in their walk with Christ (In the same way, let your
light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father
in heaven” Matthew 5:16). A good question to ponder is this: What is the motivation
behind all of the choices we make?

In all we do and say, let’s always “Look our best for JESUS!”
